Sherly Mangena: A Journey of Empowerment through End-User Computing
One of the most inspiring stories from our programme is that of Sherly Mangena, a young woman with big dreams. Growing up in Alexandra Township, Sherly witnessed the struggles of her community and aspired to make a difference. However, limited resources and a lack of technical skills made her dreams seem unattainable—until she discovered the Bokamoso Ba Rona End-User Computing training programme.
Initially hesitant, Sherly had never touched a computer before. But driven by a desire to change her circumstances, she enrolled in the training. Walking into the Bokamoso centre for her first class, she felt a mix of excitement and nervousness. The warm and welcoming trainers soon put her at ease, and she dove into learning the basics of computing.
Despite the challenges, Sherly quickly grasped the concepts, learning to create databases, design websites, and deliver presentations. More importantly, she developed a newfound confidence. The shy girl transformed into an active participant, leading group projects and speaking up in class.
When a job opening for a salesperson at a call centre caught her attention, Sherly seized the opportunity. Armed with her new skills and confidence, she applied—and was thrilled to get the job. Today, Sherly is a successful career woman, making a meaningful impact in her community. She credits Bokamoso for equipping her with the tools she needed to succeed and encourages other young people to take advantage of the programme.
Sherly continues to dream big and is now considering starting her own business. Thanks to Bokamoso, her future is bright and full of possibilities.
